Hilton Village, nestled alongside the James River in Newport News, Virginia, is a quaint community of five hundred homes designed along the lines of an English village. This first federally-funded planned community was built In 1918-19, in what was then Warwick County, to house workers at Newport News Shipbuilding and Drydock Company. At one time, the village was largely self-contained, encompassing, in addition to the school and four churches stipulated in the original charter, a firehouse, an inn, a movie theatre, a drugstore, a grocery and several professional offices. Many of these businesses are still thriving, and others have been attracted to the village since it attained National Historic District status in 1969.The village is still a close-knit community where everyone knows the mail carrier by name, costumed children and pets parade in homemade floats down Main Street on the Fourth of July, and the pier behind the school is a favorite place for fishing and watching sunsets.
